CE-marked natural slate tiles, graded to BS EN 12326 standards, ready for residential and commercial roofing projects across the UK.
A high-grade natural slate roof lasts 100 to 150 years. Asphalt shingles require replacement every 20 to 30 years, meaning a single slate installation covers the same period as three to five alternative roof cycles.
Natural slate carries a Class A1 fire rating under EN 13501-1, meaning it contributes nothing to fire spread at any stage. No coatings, treatments, or additives are required to achieve this rating.
Premium-grade natural slate tests at W1 classification under BS EN 12326-1:2014, meaning water absorption of 0.6% or less. This low uptake prevents freeze-thaw delamination, the primary cause of slate failure in UK climates.

Natural slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock formed from sedimentary deposits over hundreds of millions of years. Its density, low porosity and layered structure give it physical properties no manufactured roofing tile replicates at the same service life.
Because the slate itself rarely fails first, historically it is the fixings and timber that deteriorate before the stone. This means a correctly installed slate roof, inspected every five to seven years and re-fixed as needed, can perform across multiple generations of ownership without a full replacement.
All natural slate sold for roofing in the UK is required to carry either CE or UKCA marking, backed by a current Declaration of Performance. Testing under BS EN 12326-1:2014 covers three critical performance characteristics: water absorption (W classification), thermal cycling resistance (T classification) and carbonate content (S classification).
Slates classified as S1, T1 and W1 represent the highest performance grade available under this standard and are the appropriate specifications for exposed UK locations. Always request the Declaration of Performance and accompanying commercial documents from your supplier before committing to a product.
Natural slate roofing raises specific questions around performance, specification and installation. The answers below cover the points buyers and specifiers ask most often.
View All FAQsA correctly installed natural slate roof lasts between 100 and 150 years. Premium-grade slate from established quarries has remained watertight on buildings for over 150 years. Fixings and battens typically require attention before the slate itself fails.
BS EN 12326-1:2014 is the UK standard for roofing slate. It tests water absorption (W), thermal cycling resistance (T), and carbonate content (S). W1, T1 and S1 represent the highest classifications and are the correct specifications for most UK roofing applications.
Yes. Natural slate is the material most commonly required by planning authorities for conservation area and listed building roofing work. Welsh and Cumbrian slate are most frequently specified where matching original materials is a planning condition.
Standard natural slate sizes such as 500 x 250mm are typically installed from 25 degrees upward. Wider formats such as 500 x 300mm can be installed down to 20 degrees when holed at the correct gauge for the pitch. Always verify with the manufacturer's fixing guidance and BS 5534.
Natural slate requires minimal maintenance compared to other roofing materials. A professional inspection every five to seven years, with timely replacement of any cracked or slipped tiles, is sufficient to keep a well-installed roof performing for its full-service life.
