What lead codes are available for sand cast lead?

Sand cast lead is available from Code 6 (2.65mm), the minimum standard for sand cast roofing, through Code 7 and Code 8 for heavy-duty heritage applications, and heavier codes for specialised structural leadwork.

What is the maximum sheet size I can order?

The casting table enables a maximum roll size of 1.2 metres wide by 6 metres in length, and any dimension within this is possible. Sheets are made to order to your exact bay dimensions, minimising waste on site.

Why is sand cast lead specified for heritage buildings?

From early medieval times, churches and fine houses used lead sheets cast on a bed of sand to cover their roofs. Sand cast lead sheet is still made using this oldest method of manufacture, as it remains in demand for restoration and refurbishment work where like-for-like replacement is required.

Does sand cast lead meet British Standards?

Since sand cast lead is a specialist material, there is no BBA certification or British Standard for this product. It is therefore extremely important to select a trusted and reputable source to ensure an even thickness, high quality, and an accurate cut-to-size service.

Can existing site lead be recast into new sand cast sheet?

Sand cast lead is used extensively in renewing the roofs of historic buildings, where existing lead coverings can be stripped and sent to the casting company for recasting into new lead sheets for replacement. This reduces waste and material costs on larger heritage contracts.

Code-specific thickness for every application

From Code 3 (1.32 mm) for soakers and light flashings to Code 8 (3.55 mm) for wide parapets and heritage domes, each code is manufactured to precise BS EN 12588 tolerances.

Fully malleable for complex roof details

Lead sheet fits tightly around chimney stacks, dormer windows and irregular penetrations. Its natural malleability means it conforms to any contour without cracking or splitting.

Corrosion resistant in all weather conditions

Lead resists corrosion from the atmosphere, salt air, and UV degradation. Correctly installed to BS 6915, it outlasts most alternative flashing materials by a significant margin.

What is lead flashing and where is it used?

Lead flashing consists of rolled lead sheet formed and fixed to seal the junctions where a roof meets a wall, chimney, dormer or valley. These areas are the most vulnerable points for water ingress, and lead’s malleability allows it to be fitted tightly into chases, around penetrations and over complex profiles that other materials cannot reliably follow.

It is used across residential, commercial and heritage roofing for step flashings, apron flashings, soakers, back gutters, valley linings, parapet cappings and lead slates. The correct code is selected based on the application: Code 4 is the standard choice for general chimney and abutment flashings, while Code 5 suits wider aprons and more exposed positions, and Codes 6 to 8 are specified for valleys, box gutters and demanding heritage details.

Lead flashing sizes: widths, lengths and roll formats

Lead flashing is manufactured in rolls, with standard lengths of 3 m and 6 m being the most widely stocked. Common widths run from 150 mm for soakers and narrow step flashings through to 600 mm for aprons and back gutters. Wider sheet up to 1.6 m is available for valley linings and flat roof bays. The most frequently specified widths for domestic roofing are 150 mm, 240 mm, 300 mm and 600 mm.

Joints should be lapped by a minimum of 100 mm to ensure an effective weathertight seal at every course. Where a project calls for bespoke dimensions, rolls can be cut to specific lengths prior to dispatch to reduce site waste and handling time. Check the current price per roll at the top of this page, as lead prices are reviewed monthly in line with commodity market movements.
